Died or Lost At Sea

Seascape

The greatest maritime disaster during the Civil War that involved Vermonters was the sinking of the steamship "North America" on 22 November 1864, off the coast of Georgia, with a loss of nearly 200 souls. Nine Vermonters died, including seven who were serving in the Seventh Vermont Infantry, one Vermonter serving in the 2nd New York Cavalry and one in the 4th Massachusetts Artillery. They were sailing home from the Gulf of Mexico.

Vermont native Marvin J. Brown, 2nd New York Cavalry, survived, along with 60+ others.
