BELVIDERE --- Mr. Phineas Carpenter, an early settler in this town, was buried Jan. 28, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Carpenter will be missed by all his neighbors and townsmen. It was said by his comrade Capt. R. D. Whittemore at the funeral, that he had never been sued, or brought suit against any person in his life, which would indicate the peaceful disposition of the man.

He had held all the town offices in the gift of the town, having been for a number of years town clerk. Although beyond the age prescribed by law at which he would be liable to serve in the army, he volunteered for the defence of his country, and it is said by his comrades, made a good and reliable soldier in the Rebellion.
