TWINS 85 FOUGHT IN CIVIL WAR
Two natives of Hartland, twins, February 15 celebrated to be the oldest twins now living who served in the Civil war. They are William B. and Wilber F. Chapman (sic) and were born in Hartland February 15, 1840, sons of Joseph and Lydia (Case) Chandler, old and much respected local citizens. At birth they were weaklings and the attending physician did not expect them to live, but in spite of the early predictions they survived the hardships of the Civil war and 85 winters spent largely in New England.
William B. began his army life in the 3rd Vermont regiment near the opening of the war and served until its close, taking part in 30 battles and skirmishes. He married first Diantha Baker of Keene, N. H., who died a few years after marriage. His second wife was Mrs. Helen Fiske, also of Keene, who still survives.
Wilbur F. was a member of the 15th Vermont regiment and served only nine months, that being the term of enlistment. He married Sarah M. Olmstead of Elmore, N. Y., who died a number of years ago. They had three children, two of whom are living, Mrs. Mattie Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. May S. Knowles of Keene.
