Derby, William R., age 18, was credited to Sudbury, Vermont. He enlisted August 23, 1864, and mustered in that same day as a Private in Co. B, 8th VVI. Derby mustered out June 1, 1865. He married Mary Derby, from Canada, and they raised a family of four children who went to the West Hill District No. 13 School, including Mabel, Bessie, Gordon, and James. William died November 3, 1902, and is buried in the West Hill Cemetery; the stone says, "Born in Shoreham," and "from Canada."

William Derby and his wife Mary raised four children on West Hill, after returning from the Civil War. He his two sons and two daughters all attended the West Hill School.

William Derby died at his home in West Rochester on Monday.
