Biography
JAMES N. GATES
Enlisted from Essex, Vt., September 19, 1862, at the age of 19 years, as a private in Company F, 13th Vt. Vol. Inf., and was mustered into the service October 10, 1862. He was with the regiment until mustered out July 21, 1863. Died at his home in Essex, Vt., April 13, 1903.

Obituary
ESSEX CENTRE.
James N. Gates, a long-time resident of Essex, died at his home here Monday morning, aged 58 years. Mr. Gates has been suffering for several years from a cancer on the left side of his face. Three years ago last February he went top Rome, N. Y., for treatment, with only partial relief. He went four times. The physicians finally told him there was no help for him. His sufferings were great the last few months, but he bore them patiently. Mr. Gates was a veteran of the Civil War, a member of Co. F, 13th regiment, Vermont infantry, and served with his regiment in all its battle s and was in the three days' fight at Gettysburg.
