Springfield Republican

Death of Horatio W. Gilligan

Horatio W. Gilligan, 68, died late yesterday afternoon at his home, 6 Lozier avenue, after a long illness. About three years ago he was compelled to give up his position in the H.B. Smith company foundry on account of rheumatism and since then had conducted a small grocery business. Five months ago he was taken much worse and had been failing steadily all the spring. Mr. Gilligan was born in Vermont and was a veteran of the civil war, having served for 3 1/2 years in Co. I of the 7th Vermont regiment. For 17 years he lived in Springfield but went to Westfield 11 years ago. Besides his widow, he leaves one son, Frank O. Gilligan of Westfield. The funeral will be conducted at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's church and the burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
