Died at his home in this city, on last Sunday morning, 10:30 o'clock, of old age. Mr. Gerard Holcomb, father of Mr. Frank Holcomb, of Portland, who is well known by many citizens; and grandfather of Mrs. W. B. Dillard of this city.

After Girard's wife died in 1885 he moved to California where his son Frank was living. He entered the US National Home for Disabled Veterans 20 September 1888 and was discharged 20 Apr 1894. It was stated on his paper work that his nearest relative was his son Frank Holcomb of Los Angeles, California.

Since there was fire in Washington DC where the 1890 US Census reports were stored, there is no way of finding a census report for the time that Girard and Frank were living in California.

They came back to Oregon, as we know from the 1900 US Census reports: Girard was living with a family in Portland and was a carpenter and Frank and his 1st wife Ada were living in Portland, Frank was a Traveling Salesman.

In 1910 Girard is living in St. Helens, Oregon and Frank is living in Portland with his 2nd wife Anna.
