George Leonard, aged 83 years,died on Sunday following a shock which he suffered Friday. He had been in poor health for a number of years. Although born in Savoy, he had lived most of his life in and around Pownal and was a farmer by occupation. He was a Civil War veteran, enlisting in 1862 in Company J, 7th regiment, Vermont Volunteers, and served until the close of the war. He was able, with assistance, to attend the Memorial day services at Oak Hill cemetery, this Year.
Those who survive are a wife, Mrs. Diana Leonard, three sons, Frank J. of Pownal, William of North Adams, and Mark of Bennington, one daughter, Mrs. Emma Lane of White Creek, N.Y., 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the home on Mountain street with Rev. Harry Brochwell officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery.
