Biography

"Sergeant Horace Gardner volunteered from the town of Calais, Vt., in September, 1862, and joined Company H. Was appointed 1st Sergeant June 4th, 1863 because he merited the honor. His age at enrollment was 27. A fine specimen of physical build, every indication of being able to endure the occupation of a soldier in an active campaign. He was a good non-commissioned officer and first class soldier. He did himself credit in the battle of Gettysburg. Was mustered out with his regiment July 21st, 1863. Returned home and resumed his place in society and continued an honored citizen. (Sturtevant, 655)."
