In East Highgate, Vt., the 12th inst., of consumption, Erasmus W. Rice, late a Sergeant in Co. F., 10th Vt. Vols. young Rice entered the army Aug. 7, 1862, and continued in service with his Regiment until the battle of Cedar Creek, Va. Oct. 19, 1864, where he was dangerously wounded, the consequence of which he was discharged from the service, June 2d, 1865. He never fully recovered from the effects of the wounds, but the foundation of the disease was laid, which resulted in his death. As a soldier he will be remembered by his comrades in arms as brave and fearless, in danger ready and willing to do his duty, and who enjoyed in a high degree of confidence and respect of his associates and officers in command.
His life was marked with honesty of purpose and uprightness of character. He lived and died not in vain. The sacrifice of his life in the virgin of young manhood has added another to that glorious company of martyrs "who have died, so that the nation might live."
