Oliver Rood

Notes collected while tracing Oliver Rood

The 1892 Revised Roster lists Rood as credited to Brookfield, which I assumed was Brookfield, Vermont, but the 1863 Draft Registration has him listed as a resident of Brookfield, Mass., and said he was in a Vermont unit.

The following is a timeline of his life as we have found it to date (most links are to ancestry.com, a subscription service).

1860 - Jericho, VT (census)
1862-1865 - 8th Vermont and 2nd Mass. Hvy Arty (svc/pension records)
9/4/1862 - briefly missing in action after battle at Bayou des Allemands (casualty lists)
06/1863 - Brookfield, MA! (draft registration, 20yo single white male, b. Vt, prior VT service)
1876 - San Francisco, CA (voter registration, farmer, 635 California Street)
1880 - Ash Valley, CA (census, a servant in the home of Rollin West)
1886 - Reno, NV (GAR roster)
04/14/1890 - Brookfield, VT, having just returned from Denver, CO with his brother (Argus & Patriot)
1890 - Brookfield, VT (census
6/2/1890 - Pension application citing service in both units
1892 - National Soldiers Home, Dayton, OH (home roster)
3/14/1894 - Brookfield, VT, visiting his brother (Argus & Patriot)
1900 - National Soldiers Home, Marion, IN (home roster)
1900 - Center, Indiana (census)

The following ship manifests:

8/14/1930 - arrived in Southampton, England from New York on MAJESTIC, registered at the Crown Hotel, Southampton
15 May 1931 - embarked VULCANIA, sailing from Cannes, France on 5/6/1931, arriving in New York 5/15/1931
10/10/1932 - arrived in Southampton, England on MAURETANIA from New York, in transit to Gibraltar
10/15/1932 - departed Southampton on RANPURA, bound for Gibraltar

Oliver Rood died in Tulloch Memorial Hospital, Tangier, Morocco, on 5 December 1932 of pulmonary congestion, and was buried in 'Christian Cemetery', Lot 954/4 (probably St. Andrews Church Cemetery), Tangier. "The deceased was a pensioner of the United States." His next of kin was listed as Miss Clara Rood, 656 Main Street, Worcester, Mass., his niece. She had been listed a couple times in the various National Home records listed above.
