The Ogdensburg Journal says that the late Dr. Socrates N. Sherman, of that place was born in Barre, in 1801. When at the age of twenty he entered the office of Dr. Van Sickler as a student, and graduated at Castleton Medical College in 1824. In 1861 he wet south as Surgeon as the 34th regiment of New York Volunteers, and afterwards became medical director of the department of West Virginia. While in the service he contracted the disease, which at last, resulted in his death.
