Biography

Sylvanus Colby was born in Bridgewater, Vermont 15 June 1843, son of Amos & Hannah (Payne) Colby. He was living in Barnstead, Vt. when he enlisted 29 Sept. 1863 in Co. "I" 4th NH Infantry. He was discharged 23 Aug. 1865 at Raleigh, NC. He served 1 year 10 mos. 28 days. He was a farm laborer all his life. He was also on the 1890 Pensioner's list, living in South Woodstock. He m. in Pomfret, 24 June, 1871, Ellen A. "Nellie" Sanderson of South Woodstock (b. Barnard, Vt. 1852, dau. of Benjamin & Rosanna Sanderson). Sylvanus died from acute colitis after a 4 day illness in Woodstock, 10 Sept. 1917 (age 74 yrs. 2 mos. 26 days).
