He was born in Fairfax, Vermont, Jan. 28, 1843, and was married to Martha Demott at New Orleans, Sept. 2, 1865. He came to Rockford in 1885 and had lived here all the time since. He enlisted in the 110th New York volunteer infantry and was afterward transferred to the First Louisiana cavalry and for illness was afterward placed in the 142d battalion of the veteran reserve, from which he was mustered out at the close of the war.
He leaves a wife and four children. There are two sons, Herbert and Henry, both of Racine, Wisc., and two daughters, Mrs. George Two and Mrs. William Conrad, both of Rockford. He had been ill for the past fourteen months and the latter part of this time has been a great sufferer being unable to lie down.
