Dennis Charles Photograph Collection
I am a native of Fremont, Ohio (home of Rutherford B Hayes), and started collecting Civil War Relics in the 1960's. I am a founding member of the re-activated 100th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Company F, 1972, a member of Sherman's Bummers, Thomas's Mudsills, Irish Brigade (116th Pa), and a former Living Historian at Fort Meigs, Maumee Ohio (1812 restored Fort).
I moved to Vermont in early 1980's. Finding 100th OVI images became impossible (until the invention of the internet) so I began to look at Rutland Vermont and its role in the conflict. I narrowed my collecting focus to primarily CDV images of Vermont soldiers, and began to look at all the unidentified images on the local market and stockpiling in hopes of identifying in the future. My goal was to begin developing a photographic identification guide to Vermonters.
The "Vermont in the Civil War" website has made that a much more realistic goal. Some of the barriers standing in the way of the sharing of these materials have been displaced. We can begin pool the resources of the major collections i.e. State Museum/Library, War College, local historical societies, the University of Vt. Collection and private collections into one major clearing house. By doing so curators can preserve the integrity and condition of the institutional collections, private collectors can build and maintain their personal collections. It also supports the history of our forefathers in a very accessible, public and cost effective manner.
