The Last Roll Call

The obituaries found for Vermont Civil War soldiers occasionally used phrases such as:

Answered the last roll call,
Dropping from the ranks,
Falling out of line,
Dropping from the ranks one by one,
Old Soldier Gone,
Thus, one by one - They answer the last bugle call-- Their life's work done.

Among these obituaries are included the death of Dana H. Whitney, the first Vermont casualty, in 1861, the death of Gilbert Lucier, the last Civil War soldier to die in Vermont, in 1944, and the death of Henry A. Horton, the last soldier with Vermont service to die, in 1946.
