The first shot "Fired by Capt Jones With Sergt Shafer's Carbine Co. E 8th Illinois Cavalry."
Captain Marcellus Ephraim Jones, 8th Illinois Cavalry, was a native of Poultney, Vermont. See his biography.
The marker is west of Gettsburg, across from the intersection of US Route 30 and Knoxlyn Road, You can park just before the intersection - the white house is on government property.
