Orders
STATE OF VERMONT.
Adjutant and Inspector General's Office,
Woodstock, August 8, 1862.General Order No. 12
Whereas the President of the United States, by order dated August 4, 1862, has directed that a draft of three hundred thousand militia be immediately called into the service of the United States, to serve nine months unless sooner discharged; and whereas the quota thereof, assigned to the State of Vermont is four thousand, eight hundred and ninety-eight men, for which requisition has been made:-
It is therefore hereby ordered, that all companies of Uniform Militia in this State be and they hereby are detached for service under said order of the President of the United States; and the commanding officer of each of said companies will report, with his company, for active service, as the law directs, at such place of general rendezvous, and at such time, as shall hereafter be designated by orders from these Head Quarters; and in the meantime is hereby directed to hold himself in readiness for active service,with the company under his command, in the town in which said company is located, until further orders. And the commanding officer of each of said companies is hereby directed forthwith to issue his order, thereby directing the company under his command to assemble, forthwith, as such place as he shall designate, in the town in which said company is located, and hold themselves in readiness for active service, and cause notice thereof to be given to each member of his said company, in the manner provided by law.
The Commanding Officer of each of said companies is hereby authorized and directed forthwith to fill his company, by enlistments, to the number of one hundred and one, including officers; and every able-bodied man, resident in any town in this State, who shall enlist in such company, will be credited to the town of which is is such a resident, in determining the number of men to be raised by draft from the enrolled militia in such town, for the purpose of completing the quota of four thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight men assigned to Vermont as aforesaid.
It is further ordered, that the Commanding Officer of each of said companies deposit in the office of the Adjutant and Inspector General of this State, at Woodstock, on or before the twenty-fifth day of August, A. D. 1862, at twelve o'clock, noon, a complete and perfect roll of all able-bodied men of his company, stating the name, rank, age and true residence of each, with a certificate signed by such commanding officer, that it is a correct roll of his company. If such company shall be filled to the number of one hundred and one able-bodied men previous to said day, such roll is to be forwarded as soon as the company is filled; but the roll must be deposited at the office of the Adjutant and Inspector General on the twenty-fifth day of August, 1862, whether such company is filled or not.
