John Healy Buxton was the son of Simeon Bentley and Caroline Boyden (Bullard) Buxton (F). He was one of the first men to enlist from Montpelier. Later, he was the first in Montpelier to enlist in the Vt Cavalry. As permitted, he remained on the roll of No.5 while in the Marines. See biography & photo, VTCW150.

Charles H. Clogston was born Worcester Twp., Washington Co., Vt., 1 Jan 1840, the son of Rodney and Martha Clogston (LDS). Clogston enlisted at Worcester, about ten miles from Montpelier, and West Fairlee, nearly 40 miles. He married Betsey Hill in Worcester 30 Dec 1863 (LDS) while in the 17th Infantry.

Robert John Coffey was the first man to enlist in Montpelier. He was active in the GAR, Masons, the Society of Vermont Officers, and was a captain in the State Militia. He helped organize the Soldiers' Home at Bennington in the late 1880's, and served as its first superintendent. His Medal of Honor is at the Vermont Historical Society. Coffey married Demis Hattie Burnham in 1867. They had at least two children. The 1850 Census, Montpelier Township, does not include Coffey, but may list his parents John (farmer, age 30, b. Nova Scotia), and Mary, age 25, b. Nova Scotia; also Elizabeth, age 7. Some sources state he was b. St. Johns, New Brunswick. Coffey was elected foreman of No.5; See biog., pp. 31-32. Nine members of No.5 enlisted in the 2nd Infantry on 7 May, and the roll of No.5 gives that date of enlistment for Crossman. The 20 May date may be that of his commission. He was a graduate of a military school, and was Foreman of Capitol No.5. See biog., pp. 29-30.
