Hiram S. Smith born Berlin, Washington Co., Vt. 15 Jan 1841, the son of Abner and Rebecca (Carr) Smith (LDS). 1850 Census, Montpelier Township: Hiram Smith, age 8, b. Vt.; household of Abner (joiner) and Rebecca Smith. Hiram was the brother of John W. Smith. Hiram married Elizabeth Coffey 23 Jun 1867, in Berlin. She was born 20 Dec 1844 in New Brunswick, may have been sister of Robert J. Coffey. Hiram’s Montpelier enlistment overlaps an enlistment in the 13th Vt Infantry by a Hiram S. Smith at Highgate, so separate individuals.

Vt.; household of Horatio N. (wheelwright) and Harriet Taplin. Military unit unknown; name not found in rosters of Union army; another service possible. He was the first treasurer of Capitol No.5. 1850 Census, Montpelier Township: Oscar Webster, age 15, printer, born in Vermont. Webster was one of the first men to enlist from Montpelier. As permitted, he retained his membership in No.5 while with the 1st Infantry. Soldiers and Sailors also show Oscar N. Webster in 1 Vt Batt Light Art, SGT (in/out) and Signal Corps US Vols PVT (in/out); the Vermont rosters do not show these enlistments. The 6th Ind Co VRC was organized at Boston 1 Dec 1865 of men from 3rd , 11th , and 13th VRC Regts.
