The story chronicles, among others, the lives of Lt Cyren Lawton and Pvt. Chandler Russell, Wilmington boys who left home together, not knowing one would not return. It narrates the embarrassing kidnapping of Brigadier General Stoughton by Mosby's raiders, and the brigade's subsequent superlative service under his successor, George J. Stannard.
