2nd Vermont Infantry

I never got over it and never shall.

The enclosed letter (click on the envelope and subsequent pages to read) was mailed to Cora Alice Powers, nee Prior, daughter of Elbridge W. Prior from her aunt, Mary Adams Prior, who had married Austin Jones Prior, Elbridge's younger brother.

Mary is probably the sister of John Wesley Adams, of Ludlow, who was 20 when he enlisted on 7 May 1861, mustering in six weeks later as a private in Co. I, 2nd Vermont Infantry. John was mortally wounded in action at Cold Harbor on 1 June 1864. Mary, who was two years younger than John, would have been 21 at the time of the story she relates, nearly 56 years after John's death.

Original letter and transcript contributed by Pat Powers McInerney, Palm Beach, FL, granddaughter of Cora Powers, the recipient of the letter.
