Frank Dana Hyde Diaries
January - July 1867

Much will be discovered by reading the 1867 entries. This diary identifies the birthdays of those people important in Frank's life, and this has helped tremendously in proving definite ages. At the beginning of this year, Frank and his friend, Albert A. Boardman, are living in Tompkins, Michigan primarily with the family of Horace Boardman Foote and Delia Minerva Havens Foote and their six children: Albert Havens, age 18; Caroline Frances, age 15; Wallace Henry, age13; Harriet Eliza, age 11; John Clark, age 9; and Charles Howard, age 7. In 1869, another child will be born, a girl - Kate Eurette. Frank enjoys the company of these young friends and others, as a young man at this age is wont to explore. Hard work still lies ahead, however, and travels away from Tompkins take place for a few weeks, with lumbering taking the place of farming for awhile. Perhaps it is the memories of this time spent at the Footes that keep him going through difficult times which lie ahead. As time goes on, it will become clear that one young lady in particular has captured his heart.

There are many things left unanswered as time goes on in 1867. It isn't clear as to where Carrie has gone for a few weeks - perhaps to visit relatives elsewhere - or why Frank does not combine forces with his friends (Norman, Albert and Jacob -"the Boys) in purchasing a farm in Jackson. However, they all remain buddies and help each other in their endeavors. No matter what they do, their labors seem to be hard and it astounds me that at the end of such rigorous work, Frank still feels it important to make daily entries in his journal.

Deciphering Frank's handwriting is not always easy, but with the repetition of some of the letters it is evident by now that the capital letter K is similar to the H. Thus, the person referred to earlier as "Hin" is really "Kin". My apologies for this error.
