Frontier Cavalry (aka 26th New York Cavalry)
Frank Dana Hyde Diaries
January - June 1868

As I type up these diaries, it occurs to me how simple it is to enter the few lines to describe a day. Reading through them could be looked upon as boring or humdrum, especially during those times when one day nearly repeats the day or days before. However, each entry represents a full 24 hours to journal, more often than not filled with difficult duties that escape us in our modern day luxuries, hours that reflect the good and bad times, hours spent with friends or in lonely work. As such they are a true reflection of the life and times, which is one of the main purposes of sharing them with the world.

Frank's ventures in Michigan during 1867 include farming in Tompkins, followed for a few months with mill work at a lumber yard in Sheridan where Norm is. His buddy, Norman's cousin, Albert goes with him, and then apparently all three return to Tompkins. His entries are obviously shorter when he is away from his friends which, to me, displays the enjoyment he had in being with them. Later he will travel again, leaving Tompkins for the rest of the year going farther north to a mill in Pent Watter and to Hart, Michigan where his uncle Paul (P.C.) Hyde resides with his Aunt Maria. Paul is a farmer and has a harness shop, according to records. Frank stays there until November when he leaves for work in Chicago and then on to Dixon, Illinois, where family on his mother's side (Severance) live. Here he finishes out the year.

Although Frank has not recorded it in his journal, while he is in Hart, Albert's bride, Georgie (Georgianna Jackson) dies. And in November Norman Wilcox Boardman marries Nellie. In those days, Nellie was a common nickname for Helen - her full name being Helen Clark Foote. She was, in relationship to Carrie, her aunt, her father's younger sister by 29 years. Now - here is 1868:
