United States Sharpshooters
Tilson Photograph Album

William F. Tilson (1844-1910), of Bethel, enlisted November 1, 1861 at age 18, and was mustered as a Private on November 9, in the 2d Vermont company of sharp shooters, which became Company E, 2d U. S. Sharp Shooters. He was promoted to Sergeant on January 3, 1863, and re-enlisted December 21. Commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant on November 12, 1864, he served with the sharp shooter company until being transferred to Co. G, 4th Vermont Infantry on February 25, 1865. He was wounded before Petersburg, Va., on April 2, and was discharged September 8, as a result of losing his right leg.

During his service, Tilson acquired, and preserved, a number of photographs of his fellow sharp shooters and other friends. That collection has been maintained through the years, and recently came into the possession of Mr. Don Troiani, who has graciously allowed us to reproduce the photographs from this album.
