JAMES McKOWEN at the age of 20 enlisted at Colchester in August, 1862, in Company D. He made a good soldier, never lost a day from Illness, answered every call promptly, and could be depended on to execute any order given him. He was of an ingenious turn of mind and could construct a stick and mud chimney that was proof against cartridges thrown down it by mischievous comrades outside. He returned to Vermont with the company, emigrated to Tennessee, in which state he died previous to 1892.
