Sergeant William Piper, 9th Vermont, who was KIA at Newport Barracks, NC, 2/2/1864, was originally buried on the battlefield, and later re-interred in the national cemetery in New Bern. He has a cenotaph in the family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery, Springfield, and a modern military headstone here at Smokeshire Cemetery. Check his record to see all three of the stones.
