Alexander Campbell Died in Jail of Alcoholism

Montpelier, July 26 - Alexander Campbell, who was arrested for intoxication last Saturday and sentenced in city court Monday to twenty days in Washington county jail, died at an early hour this morning of acute alcoholism. He became ill in jail and a physician was summoned. He appeared worse last evening, and a physician was again called., but he was more comfortable shortly after midnight and went to sleep. At 6:30 o'clock this morning an attendant entered his cell with medicine and found him dead.

Campbell was 69 years old. He had lived here practically all his life, his trade being that of a stone mason. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. A, 6th Vt. Vols.
