       May the 28th 1863

Dear wife I will try
and write a few lines to
let you know that I am well
and we have moved our
camp we our [are?] 3 miles(?) from
union mills now guarding the
railroad our regiment is scattered
along on the road to keep
the rebs off don't know how
long we shall stay here
don't have much to do I have
got through for it
is easier in the ranks I find
I haven't heard from you for
4(?) days and am anxious to hear
from you and think I shall
soon how is the girl [he must be referring to Effie May, who was born on May 17, 1863]
I shan't write much today
hope you will write often
as you always have our time
is drawing to a close only (8?) weeks
more to stay and then I will
come and see the girl I hope
this will find you well and
???? I must close for the
mail is going out soon

loving husband
