Remarks: There are several pension applications for this soldier. The first application was filed on 09/02/1897 (and approved) by his "widow" Lucia M. Whitaker in Minnesota. There is a subsequent application for a disability pension filed on 12/05/1904 (and approved) in Minnesota for the soldier. On 04/26/1906 an article appeared in The Bethel Courier which reported that this soldier was visiting Bethel, VT for the first time in 47 years. The article mentions his residence as St. Louis, MO at the time of that visit. This pension lists the soldier's date of death as 09/28/1912. Another pension for widow's benefits for Lucia M. followed his death, and she continued to receive benefits until her death on 03/12/1925. It should be noted that Lucia was listed as a widow in numerous city directories between 1897 and 1908.
