Lamoille County News Dealer Oct 19, 1864

Lawson Whittemore, aged 21, 8th Regt. Co. A in Washington, Sept 21, of wounds received in the battle of Winchester, Lawson son of Russell Whittemore Co. A. 8th Vt. Reg.

Lines On The Death Of Lawson Whittemore

Away from home he died.
With only strangers near:
Without no friendly hand
To wipe the falling tear.
He's gone; he's gone, forever gone!
The one we loved so dear; Far in a distant land he lies.
And never will come near.
Enlisted in his Country's cause,
A soldier brave was he;
But I shall never see his face, ----
O, how it sorrows me.
We hope he's gone to find his rest,
Far in that happy land:
Where we will try some future day,
To join the heavenly band.
We'll take the track and we'll pursue
The road that leads us there;
Hoping some future day to meet
The one we love so dear.
