Biography

Eden Carpenters Serve in Mass. Regiment

>

Joseph W. and Allen P. Griswold were carpenters in Eden, Vermont whose ancestors had come to Vermont in 1767. Their great grandfather, John Griswold, had served from Vermont in the Revolutionary War and been killed at the battle of Long Island in New York on August 27, 1776. Sons of Elisha and Polly Griswold, both were married with children.

On January 30, 1864, they enlisted in the 56th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry headed by Colonel Charles Griswold of Boston, Massachusetts. Joseph was 33, and Allen 37. They were mustered on February 4, 1864, and assigned to Company I. The 56th Regiment left Massachusetts on March 20, 1864. Colonel Charles Griswold was killed on May 6, 1864, in the battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. Joseph W. Griswold was killed on May 12, 1864, at the "Bloody Angle" in Spotsylvania, Virginia. There is no record of burial in a National cemetery, so it is assumed that he was buried on the battlefield. Allen P. Griswold was wounded on May 18, 1864, in Spotsylvania, Virginia. He died of his wounds at a hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on May 24, 1864. He is buried in Eden Corners Cemetery in Eden, Vermont.
