Memorial Day Observed.

Edward F. Gower -- Born in England in 1819; enlisted October 31, 1861, as private in Company H, Ninety-eighth New York volunteers; promoted sergeant; mustered out August 31, 1865. Joined Stannard Post May 17, 1895. Died at Soldiers' Home in Bennington, December 31, 1901, of heart disease, and was buried in Elmwood cemetery in this city..

Date of death is a typographical error. No death certificate found, but the St. Johnsbury Caledonian says he died Dec. 13, the West Randolph Herald and News of 12/19 says 'on Friday', which would have been the 13th. His gravestone says 12/12.
