Norman Ailes Smith

Norman Ailes Smith died May 2nd, after a long illness of creeping paralysis. He was born in Morristown April 15, 1853 (sic), the family name being Ailes. He was adopted by Philander Smith and brought to this town when seven months old, where he has since resided. He enlisted in 1861 in Co. A, 8th Vt., serving through the war as wagoneer. At the close of the war he returned here and engaged in farming. JAN 31st, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Pease, who survives him. He was a member of Geo. P. Foster Post, G.A.R. serving one tome as commander. The funeral was held from the Cong'l church, Monday at 1 o'clock p.m., Rev. J. H. Willis officiating. A detail of Foster Post acted as bearers, and read their burial service at the grave. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery. ( Wolcott)

This is typed as published in the Morrisville Messenger on May 8th 1908. I questioned his birthdate, as it didn't line up with his military service or marriage. Hid death cert. as registered in Wolcott Vt. States he was born 1832, and died at the age of 76 in 1908.
