Obituary
Lewis B. Bates, aged about 83, died at the Waterbury State hospital Monday morning, Sept. 3, where he had been taken from Randolph sanatorium two months before. Burial will be Thursday in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Gaysville. Mr. Bates was born in Bethel about 1837 and lived on the place on the north road to Gaysville now occupied by Will Parsons. At times Mr. Bates drove a stage. He enlisted, Dec 23, 1863, in the 8th Vermont Regiment, mustered in Jan. 2, 1864 and mustered out May 13, 1865. He has lived most of his life in Bethel or in this vicinity.
