"The final statement of the [Eighth Vermont Infantry] regiment shows that a larger number of its members re-enlisted than of any other Vermont regiment except the Seventh; and that more men of the Eighth were promoted to be officers in other regiments than of any other Vermont regiment, no less than [41] of its members receiving commissions in the regiments of the United States colored troops, which were officered by white men. Blake, Charles W., Eden, Enlisted as Private 10/28/61. Elected Third Sergeant Co. A Eighth Vermont, 11/13/61. Appointed First Sergeant 7/7/62. 9/62, received orders to recruit for a new regiment called the Third Native Guards of Louisiana Volunteers. Appointed Captain Co. A, of this regiment 11/24/62, commissioned being signed by Gen. N. P. Banks; regiment assisted in building a fort at Baton Rouge, and from thence went to Port Hudson, and remained during the entire siege; Captain Blake captured the first prisoner taken around the works 5/27/63; was in command of the regiment during the memorable battle of that day, and continued in command during his term of service, until disch. 12/6/63, on Surgeon's certificate of disability.

Promoted Maj. 1st Louisiana Native Guards, 4/9/63, which was a regiment composed of free colored men, (73d USCT); commanding the same during the Red River campaign, and part of the time was in command of a brigade; Resigned 7/30/64, having served three years and three months in the U.S. service; present in action at the capture of Forts Jackson and St. Phillip, capture of new Orleans, Port Hudson Second, the Red River Campaign, besides several other battles and skirmishes.
